Almost one hundred million dollars have been approved for use by SOCOM in fitting Air Force MQ-9 and Army MQ-1C UAVs with new technology and advanced capabilities. One upgrade will allow Special Forces to carry electronic equipment that lets them control the UAVs weapons and surveillance systems. This is the next step in a program that began in 2002 when a soldier asked for an electronic device that allowed him to see the live video footage from a Predator or AC-130. The first two prototypes were bulky and had to be transported in a vehicle, but by 2004 a portable device integrated into a backpack became available.
