A new leader, Ismail Qaani, has been appointed command of the Quds Force following the death of Soleimani, who Ali Khamenei believes to be a martyr. The Quds Force is one of the eight branches in the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Force that officially started in the late 1980s. Operating as an off-shore unit, the Quds Force has often been seen interacting and working with groups in areas such as Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan that have been labeled terrorist organizations by the United States. Khamenei has praised the successor Qaani as he steps into the new role. The U.S. Treasury Department has listed him as a “specially designated national” due to his involvement with supporting terrorist groups with weapons and finances.
