Beyond Soleimani: Implications for Iran’s proxy network in Iraq and Syria | Nakissa Jahanbani, CTC Perspectives

In one airstrike on January 3, the U.S. removed two of the most “critical actors” in Iranian regional strategy: Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force Major General Qassem Soleimani, and Iraqi politician and militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. This strike came at a time that tensions between the U.S. and Iran in Iraq were at their highest. Soleimani “cultivated” relationships with dozens of proxies throughout the Middle East. His death is significant, however, al-Muhandis’s death is just as significant, due to his role in Iraq. What were Iran’s priorities in Iraq? A global audience is left wondering what is next for the role of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force in the region.
