The Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle is being regarded as a technological breakthrough in the hands of Russia that can travel 27 times faster than the speed of sound. A similar system has been in the works in China, leaving the U.S. to wonder how the two countries will choose to utilize the technology. The Avangard is launched on top of a ballistic missile like a normal warhead, but it has the capacity to make sharp turns and still reach the destination, making it harder to intercept. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has commented that the first missile to mount the warhead has been entered into combat duty.
