Almost 3,500 troops stationed at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Division are being deployed following the airstrike that killed Qasem Soleimani. The first 650 left on News Years Day for Kuwait, with the rest following shortly. Leaving within 18 hours of receiving the call, this is the first time 82nd has done a short notice combat deployment since Panama in 1989. Numerous troops and members of the military town’s community have expressed their concern on the situation, stating how the chance for escalation and repercussions are high. Families and locals have been showing their support, with a local business owner commenting “Someone knew the right unit to call to make sure they can get the job properly done.”
