In the wake of the assassination of Iran General Qasem Soleimani, SAS troops are being sent to the Middle East to assist and evacuate Brits if tensions continue to rise. 50 SAS members will be deploying, in addition to the Special Forces Support Group in Iraq and the Navy’s Special Boat Service. As part of Operation Shader, which is a mission to help train Kurdish and Iraqi forces to defeat the Islamic State, there are at least 1,400 military and UK government civilian personnel in Iraq. Warships have been ordered by UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace to the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Iran. UK-flagged ships will also be accompanied by the Royal Navy. As tensions rise, British nationals have been advised and warned to not travel to Iraq or Middle East.
