A 26-year-old skier was found alive after five hours of being buried by an avalanche. The lucky man had been trapped with an air pocket that allowed him to breathe until he was located by his avalanche transceiver. When he was found, he was in a severe hypothermic condition, but after being transported to a hospital, his body temperature warmed up. He is no longer in critical condition. Stefan Schröck, deputy regional director of the Styrian mountain rescue service, commented on how extraordinary the rescue was when most avalanche victims don’t make it past the first 15 minutes after being trapped.
