Among eight people, Taiwan’s top military official, General Shen Yi-ming, was killed in a helicopter crash near the capital, Taipei. There were poor weather conditions when the Black Hawk helicopter lost contact with aviation authorities and needed to make an emergency landing. According to reports, there were several other military officials involved in the crash. Due to the mountainous terrain, it was difficult for the search and rescue team to quickly get to the scene of the crash. Some people were found alive among helicopter fragments and debris. President Tsai Ing-wen cancelled campaigning for re-election. The presidential election will take place on 11 January.
