U.S. sending additional forces to protect embassy threatened by protesters in Iraq | CNN

After attacks broke out in Baghdad by protesters in response to the airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, the United States will send approximately 750 soldiers to the Middle East immediately. Under the direction of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper has authorized the deployment of an infantry battalion from the Immediate Response Force of the 82nd Airborne Division. Additional forces will be prepared to deploy over the next several days. Esper commented, “this deployment is an appropriate and precautionary action taken in response to increased threat levels against U.S. personnel and facilities.” Flying aboard MV-22 Osprey, 100 Marines were deployed earlier to bolster security at the embassy. In addition to that, as a show of force, the U.S. sent two Apache helicopters to fly over the embassy in Iraq. As a way to be positioned to respond quickly in the event the situation “deteriorates,” it is believed that the additional soldiers coming from the 82nd Airborne Division will be sent to a nearby country or countries.
