This year there have been 20 American service members killed by hostile fire in Afghanistan. Green Berets make up half of that number. In most recent news, Sergeant First Class Mike Goble was killed on his third tour in the country. Occurring in the Kunduz province, Goble was killed by an explosion when he was on a mission with Afghan commandos to inspect Taliban weapon caches. Green Berets are often in harms way, and at this point in Afghanistan, they “scour” the countryside, seeking Taliban forces and ISIS fighters. They are in the most combat, while most of the 13,000 American soldiers train Afghan troops who are now responsible for security, and operate out of fortified bases. And although there is an expected troop reduction in Afghanistan, Green Berets will remain and continue a counterterror fight.
