A continuous debate and questioning of what qualifies military personnel for a purple heart has been and continues to be a fun topic of debate. Executive Order 11016 cites that a purple heart is awarded to those injured or killed under the conditions of “in action against an opposing armed force of a foreign country in which U.S. Armed Forces are or have been engaged.” Some claim that those injured by animals are “engaged” in the action. Those who oppose comment on how animal attacks are not direct enemy engagement.
