The 5307th Composite Unit, also known as Merrill’s Marauders, were banded during World War II by the Allied leaders to capture an airbase in Burma. Almost 3,000 soldiers hiked over 1,000 miles through the jungle and up the Himalayan Mountains into northern Burma to take the Myitkyina Airfield. Merrill’s Marauders fought in five major battles and 30 smaller engagements to take the airbase from the Japanese, providing airspace for Allied forces to advance towards China. The U.S. Senate has now unanimously voted to award the men with the Congressional Gold Medal.
