According to a senior administration official, the long-anticipated reduction of troops in Afghanistan will be announced by the Trump administration. Specific timing is uncertain, but the announcement could be as soon as this week. 12 to 13,000 troops currently serve in Afghanistan. Trump stated to Fox News Radio, ‘we’re going down to 8,600.’ The preparations for the announcement happen just as the peace talks with the Taliban get restarted. The ‘smaller US military presence will be focused on counter-terrorism operations,’ says Defense officials. Training and advising local Afghan forces by the US military will be reduced.
