The first woman has successfully completed the SOAS training in September but was placed in her top choice rather than offered a Navy SEAL contract. If she had been selected, she would have advanced to the 24-week long Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, a course no female has yet to attempt. The candidates for the SOAS process are selected from college programs before they receive their first contract. Only five women have ever been selected to participate in the course, with three attempting it, but only one making it all the way through. Capt. Lawrence, a spokesperson for Naval Special Warfare, declined to reveal the female candidates top career choice but commented that SEALs was not her top choice.
