An SA342 deployed to act as support Operation Barkhane was shot down near the border of Niger and Mali by militants that they believed to be working with the Islamic State. The Gazelle was hit several times in the engine compartment, creating an engine fire that led to a loss of power. Crew members from a nearby ALAT Tiger rushed to the crash site to find both pilots severely wounded. While the third crew member stayed behind to destroy the Gazelle and was later picked up by another helicopter, the Tiger crew members strapped the two pilots to the outside of their chopper in order to get them back to base.
