Mold and rat infestations led to poisoning and other hazardous issues that have made 30 families homeless for the holidays at Fort Belvoir. They are forced to wait for the private military housing contractors to remove the problems. Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Sen. Tim Kaine have recently met with two of the families and held a hearing to discuss the overflowing reports of poor housing conditions on base. Kaine has commented that Congress is working to pass more legislation that would enable the military to hold the contractors accountable. Military leaders have continued to promise improved efforts, but families are still having to wait months for any work to be done.
