Timothy Weeks and Kevin King were recently released by the Taliban when the Afghan government agreed to a hostage swap for three senior militants. It was a deal that could potentially kickstart peace talks again. Weeks has recently spoken out about the ordeal, claiming he does not hate the Taliban. Some of his guards were lovely people who he hugged when he left the facility. “I never, ever gave up hope… I knew I would leave eventually,” he commented. He mentioned that he believed U.S. special forces attempted six times to rescue them, coming close to them during a few of those attempts. Both hostages were professors at the University of Afghanistan in Kabul where they were abducted. Weeks also claims he does not blame the Islamic State soldiers for holding him captive because they were “only following orders and had no choice.” Through his experience of getting to know them, it made him wonder what brought them to this point, and why do they do what they do. It was truly eye-opening.
