German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, the leader of the Christian Democrat Union, has claimed to be in favor of national military service, due to her belief that the community within the population is priority. Workshops and talks are being held with the CDU regarding a mandatory yearlong military service for high school graduates. In 2001, Germany attempted to professionalize the military but failed to get the attention of young adults. Kramp-Karrenbaue has cited the recent reintroduction of national military service throughout Europe in the past decade as inspiration. France and Sweden have both brought back some form of the requirement but offer alternatives to the service.
