US Navy Chief fired over handling of SEAL saga involving Trump | Reuters

The Navy’s top civilian, Navy Secretary, Richard Spencer, was fired by Mark Esper, U.S. Defense Secretary, over handling Special Operations Chief Eddie Gallagher’s case on misconduct in Iraq. Gallagher later won the support of President Trump when Trump intervened to restore his rank. The decision to allow Gallagher to retain his Trident pin has also been backed by Esper. This ends the Navy’s efforts to carry out peer review that could kick Gallagher out of the elite force. Last week, Richard Spencer continued to suggest that Gallagher should go before the peer review board. Defending the need to preserve “good order and discipline throughout the ranks,” Spencer’s parting statement was, “The rule of law is what sets us apart from our adversaries.” Spencer was commended by a few, while others suggested that he was not completely truthful about the situation, meaning he allegedly had prior conversations that suggested the opposite. Ultimately, Esper’s decision to fire him was due to the “lack of candor over conversations.”
