Islamic State’s ‘backbone was broken’ in Afghanistan as hundreds surrender | Stars and Stripes

Must Read

Hundreds of Islamic State fighters and their families have surrendered in Jalalabad, Afghanistan after being cornered in the mountains in the south side of the country. U.S. and Afghan troops had been able to cut off their supplies, leading to over 600 surrenders, with the number estimated to reach the 2,000s within the next two weeks. “The result is Daesh’s backbone was broken,” said Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in a speech to his people. Some members will be put on trial or sent in for questioning, and others released to start a “new” life.
