The Ministry of Taiwan recently had to scramble together a hasty defense of ships and jets after a Chinese aircraft carrier passed by them, followed by ships from Japan and the U.S. A message was set out over social media by the defense ministry asking their citizens not to worry. While the aircraft carrier stayed on China’s side of the strait, one had not passed through since June. “Taiwan would need to reinforce its asymmetric defense capabilities so as to deter the ongoing Chinese military upgrades,” commented Andrew Yang, secretary-general of the Chinese Council of Advanced Policy Studies.
