The first infantrymen to fight on the Asiatic mainland during World War II in the China-India-Burma Theater had to battle their way through dense and dangerous jungles. Led by Brig. Gen. Frank Dow Merrill, the unit travelled 750 miles on foot by mules through the rough terrain. Only one survivor remains. Russel Hamler, age 95, resides in Pennsylvania. A petition has been organized to win the approval of members of the House of Representatives, with the Senate already being on board to award the Gold Medal.
