While deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, Derek Herrera was shot in the shoulder, but the bullet lodged itself in his shoulder, paralyzing him instantly. His fellow Marines carried him and Sergeant Rick Briere, who was also shot, through the open ground to reach the helicopter. Herrera described the day as the worst and best day of his life, because despite his injury, he saw his team come together and display extreme bravery and heroic actions. After returning home, Herrera went back to school and finished his MBA in business administration, where he came up with the idea for a catheter to make the lives of paralyzed men more comfortable.
