How Veterans Day was founded | Military Times

President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th as Armistice Day due to World War I ending on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The proclamation stated “reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory.” Other allies have also declared a Remembrance Day, such as Canada, France, and England. In 1945, President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day and declared it a national holiday to honor veterans, both living and deceased.
