President Trump plans to intervene in three cases involving troops accused of war crimes. Eddie Gallagher, found guilty of posing for a photo with a war casualty and accused of killing an unarmed Islamic State fighter and Iraqi civilians, will have his rank restored. Clint Lorance, a former platoon commander who is serving a 19-year sentence after being convicted of murdering two men in Afghanistan and attempting to kill a third, will be pardoned. Golsteyn, accused of murdering an unarmed Afghan man he believed was a Taliban bomb maker, will have his charges dropped.
“This president recognizes the injustice of you train someone to go fight and kill the enemy, then they go kill the enemy in the way someone doesn’t like, and we put them in jail or throw the book at them,” said Pete Hegseth during the Fox and Friends announcement.
