How waste gets ‘washed out’ of our brains during sleep | Medical News Today

A new study done at Boston University has revealed that during our sleep, our brain washes out waste through waves of cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid present in the spinal cord and brain. The participants in the study underwent brain scans in an MRI machine while they slept. The cerebrospinal fluid appeared to coordinate with the brain waves to help remove proteins that would otherwise buildup and become toxic. Researchers are hoping that this new discovery will help shed light on the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s and other diseases.
