While the U.S. federal agencies argue over the uses for marijuana, veterans are being left behind due to federal regulations. Despite different states legalizing medical marijuana, VA doctors are not allowed to prescribe or endorse cannabis, even if it is legal in the state in which they are located. This seems backwards to the veterans, whose demographic has a higher rate of cancer, chronic pain, and PTSD. Medical cannabis could be a safer alternative to help treat certain issues, rather than a “combat cocktail,” a mix of medications that can have serious side effects. More than two million veterans reported using marijuana to help combat their injuries. Is it time for a federal change regarding medical cannabis and our veterans?
