The 500-page report done by the Heritage Foundation ranking the overall U.S. military strength was released with a painful ‘marginal’ rating. This equates to a three out of five on the scale ranging from ‘very weak’ to ‘very strong’. The Army came through with a ‘very strong’ rating for readiness, but still had a complete score of marginal. The Marines enhanced their overall score of ‘weak’ from 2018. Senator Ernst has expressed her concern over the rating, stating “that this year’s Index of U.S. Military Strength highlights the real threats which keep me and many others up at night.” She also comments on the needed ability to “stave off threats” and abstain from looking vulnerable, which would lead to our advisories doubting our capabilities. A call for spending to be improved by utilizing it toward new technology has also been heard. With Russia and China investing in new and hybrid technology, Ernst stresses the importance of our need for emerging technology in the military.
