By targeting flu-enabling protein, antibody may protect against wide-ranging strains | Science Daily

A nationwide team of researchers is attempting to develop a universal vaccine that utilizes an antibody to protect from severe cases of influenza and even pandemics. Neuraminidase, found at the center of the brain, is used by flu viruses to replicate in the body; current vaccines release a drug that inactivates the protein, but strains change every year. Now, researchers are finding that the new antibody has the ability to block the activity of every known neuraminidase protein and are testing it with the worse cases of influenza in mice. So far, all of the mice have survived, meaning that scientists may be extremely close to finding the end-all vaccine solution.
