Sea Trials is modeled after the Marine Corps’ Crucible and the Navy’s Battle Stations recruit programs. It is a “capstone” event for the fourth class midshipmen and serves as a leadership opportunity for the Naval Academy upper class who lead the event. Sea Trials provides a final physical and mental challenge to the plebes, designed to test their teamwork and to reinforce their bonds as a company and class.
The physical and mental challenge has freshman partake in phases of events starting with the Dark Phase. After a few exercises like tire flips and crawling under barbed wire, the pool phase has students treading water while holding a rifle above their heads and unlocking padlocks while holding their breath. Between phases, the students are constantly moving and doing obstacle courses, stick fighting, simulations, and endurance runs. The event is designed for teamwork and often sees partnerships with famous athletic teams including the England national rugby team and the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. This year’s Sea Trials are coming up soon, and hopefully the new students are prepared for what lies ahead.
