As part of a Russian-government sponsored attack, the Cozy Bear hackers and the Fancy Bear organization infiltrated the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and just recently breached a European embassy in D.C. The hackers also broke into computers at the ministries of foreign affairs in three European countries revealing new types of malware. Since the first attack in 2016, Russian intelligence operations have advanced to better spy on diplomats and pursue the collapse of democracy. The Cozy Bear hackers use American tech company infrastructure to control infected computers and send domains to social media services. It is still unclear how these groups manage to work their way into the PCs of diplomats, but the US and Europe is aware of the security threats they are facing.
