Operation Kingpin, launched from Thailand and South Vietnam, featured two guide planes that led a special forces rescue helicopters into hostile territory to rescue 70 captured Americans. The raid portion of the mission was successful, but the POWs were gone by the time they arrived. Even so, the MC-130 was a part of a pivotal operation that boosted morale for hundreds of US prisoners until they could eventually escape. The Combat Shadow has since retired and is being moved to the Castle Air Museum which features more than 70 vintage military aircrafts. While it was active, the Combat Shadow was meant for stealth and flew with low visibility while also providing refuels for helicopters.
