The Trouble With America’s Water | The Atlantic

Must Read

The city of Newark, New Jersey is racing to provide water filters to residents after its water exceeded the federal lead limit three times. Some filters were found to be ineffective, and the city is still in the process of replacing its pipes. A similar situation occurred in Michigan a few years ago, and millions of Americans between 2015 and 2018 drank contaminated water. Newark denied that the lead was a real problem despite several tests that said otherwise. The US is being called to update its drinking-water infrastructure so that pipes no longer bleed dangerous chemicals into the supply. Lead in particular can cause heart and kidney disease as well as behavioral problems in children. If the lead problem persists, it could even cause increases in fetal deaths. Investments in the water system are a necessity.
