Big changes to grueling Special Forces course draw scrutiny | AP News

Army commanders are trying to shorten and simplify the course that recruits must complete to become Green Berets though their purpose is to weed out soldiers who are unable to meet security threats. Special Forces wants to make passing easier so that recruitment rates rise, but this is raising concerns that future Green Berets may not be completely qualified. While revamping courses could allow women to qualify in the future, critics are resenting the change as something that will weaken the Green Berets as a whole. Army leaders argue that shortening the courses will leave room for soldiers to do more tailored training with their units, and the courses will need to be updated to match modern warfare challenges. Certain leaders would prefer that their Green Berets have mastered the basics by the time courses end so they can learn specific skills well during assignments.
