While serving as a joint terminal attack controller attached to a combined joint special operations assault force in Afghanistan on Aug. 16, 2017, Tech. Sgt. Daniel P. Keller embarked on a clearance operation in against 350 Islamic State fighters. After 15 hours of sustained contact, the assault team struck an IED, killing four personnel, wounding 31, and causing a traumatic brain injury to Keller. He struggled to his feet and executed air-to-ground engagements while returning fire, repulsing an enemy assault less than 150 meters away.
Only 10 Airmen have received the Cross for Valor since 9/11.
