As a 24 year old soldier training on a mountain slope between Randle and Packwood on May 18, 1980, Richard Plummer hadn’t really heard anything about the Mount St. Helens activity just 30 miles away.  He didn’t know what to make of the ash storm rolling toward his Green Beret campsite and the next 24 hours of his life would be defined by escaping the aftermath of the most disastrous volcanic eruption in U.S. history.
