Across the country, doctors are treating mysterious lung illnesses. Patients in their late teens and 20s are showing up with severe shortness of breath, several days with vomiting, fever and fatigue. Some have ended up in intensive care or on a ventilator for weeks. One complication to treatment is that the patient has no idea what substances were in what they were vaping.
Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a part of the National Institutes of Health, said she was surprised at the severity of the lung disease involved in this summer’s cases, but not by the possibility that vaping products were causing such illnesses.
