The Smart might be great at its task—being small and easy to maneuver in a city—but you’d hardly call it exciting. That is, unless you crammed a 2000 horsepower jet engine where the passenger seat goes. Yeah, that’ll do.
Bill Berg, founder and chief madman at Rocketbilly Racing, built this hilarious machine as part of his touring attraction of jet-powered rides. Yep, that’s a General Electric T58-GE03 gas turbine engine with afterburner hanging out the tail of the wee little Smart.
Amazingly, the car’s factory three-cylinder engine remains in its normal location under the rear cargo area. The car is fully functional—it wears a Colorado license plate. Even the air conditioning works.
But when Bill fires up the turbine, it’s not your typical Smart anymore. He says the thing will do 200 mph. Imagine what a handful it is at that speed.
