The Ocean Festival has long been a battleground for competitors who test their athleticism on the sand and sea. This year, special forces military personnel will be joining them, showcasing their skills for the crowd in San Clemente for the first time.
The San Clemente Ocean Festival is dubbed “The Greatest Show on Surf,” drawing an estimated 50,000 people to the two-day, family-friendly event at the San Clemente Pier.
It all started more than four decades ago.
Sheridan Byerly, a Marine Safety Captain for San Clemente Lifeguards, wanted to increase participation in the Orange County Beach Games, which only tended to draw lifeguards from the local area through various competitions. He added more public, family-friendly activities. Now, there’s just about every event you can think of that celebrates the Southern California beach athlete lifestyle.
