A Topeka native and retired Navy SEAL was named Team USA’s Male Paralympic Athlete of the Games.
Dan Cnossen was presented with the honor at the Team USA awards ceremony Thursday night in Washington, D.C.
In early March, the Shawnee Heights graduate medaled in every biathlon and cross-country ski event he entered at the games in PyeongChang, South Korea.
Cnossen was the first US man to win biathlon gold in either the Olympics or Paralympics. He added four silver and one bronze to his haul.
Cnossen lost both legs above the knee when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan in 2009. He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He is currently working to a graduate degree at Harvard.
In other awards presented Thursday, Oksana Masters was named Female Paralympic Athlete of the Games, while skiing’s Gary Colliander was named Paralympic Coach of the Games.
