Changes in the senior leadership of Australia’s military have seen a former special forces officer, who later commanded a contentious border security operation, named chief of the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Lieutenant General Angus Campbell will take over his new role from Air Chief Marshal Mark Benskin in July, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on 16 April.

Lt Gen Campbell commanded Operation ‘Sovereign Borders’, the military-led border security operation aimed at combatting people smugglers, from 2013 until his appointment as the army chief in 2015. During that time he came to public attention for declining to answer questions on what he termed “on-water” operations.
