US efforts to build up a struggling Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) are focused on air power and special operations forces to help the government regain territory, according to Army General Joseph Votel, head of US Central Command (CENTCOM).

Afghan Special Operations Forces (SOF) and the Afghan Air Force “have been very good programmes” and CENTCOM is building those up “to really provide the government of Afghanistan an offensive capability that can really focus on gaining control” of territory lost to the Taliban, Gen Votel told the Senate Armed Services Committee on 13 March.

The Afghan Army, then, is to hold regained territory and the Afghan National Police are to be made more capable at helping to maintain security, he said.
