Here’s what you need to know about U.S. operations in Somalia | The Washington Post

On May 4, a U.S. Navy SEAL was killed and at least two others wounded in a raid against al-Shabab militants in Somalia. The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) said that the incident occurred in Barii, a small town approximately 40 miles west of the capital, Mogadishu. In the Somali-led operation, U.S. forces reportedly came under fire when American aircraft were used to help deploy Somali commandos.

This battle came a week before a major international conference in London intended to make progress on security and governance reform in Somalia and coordinate a new international partnership agreement to stabilize the country. The key issue under consideration is how to ensure a successful exit strategy for the 22,000-strong African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and hand over responsibilities to local Somali security forces, probably around 2020.
