Dozens of American military personnel have arrived in Somalia to support local forces battling al-Qaida loyalists active throughout east Africa, part of what appears to be an extension of U.S.-led counter-terror mission there.

As first reported by Voice of America, an unspecified number of soldiers from the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division arrived in the capital, Mogadishu, on April 2. They are partnered with the Somali army and focused on improving its logistical capabilities, said Chuck Prichard, a spokesman for U.S. Africa Command.

The mission is one of various “events” planned in Somalia, Prichard added, though it is not focused on teaching counter-terror tactics.
