On 28 January, US armed forces suffered their first casualties of the Trump administration as Chief Petty Office William Owens was killed and three other service members wounded raiding an Al-Qa’ida target in Bayda province, Yemen. Fourteen Al-Qa’ida members and 30 civilians were also reported killed, and material of intelligence value was apparently seized during the raid.
