Dozens of paratroopers were aboard the C-82 when, according to reports, “a loud, unusual noise” came from the plane’s right engine.

The soldiers, en route to their drop zone, jumped early that day, Jan. 14, 1949.

The plane – having lost one of its two engines – was burdened by a full load of fuel and passengers and was going to crash. The paratroopers planned to jump before that could happen, descending from just 300 feet above a Harnett County swamp.
