William “Hawk” Albracht had just taken command of 27 American soldiers and 150 Montagnard militiamen at Firebase Kate in South Vietnam on the Cambodian border.  At dawn Oct. 29, 1969, three North Vietnamese Army regiments with about 6,000 men crossed the Cambodian border and attacked.
