U.S. troops cannot fix internal strife in the Middle East – The Washington Post

In his Aug. 10 op-ed column, “Hindsight from Iraq,” Fred Hiatt explained his support for President Obama’s Iran nuclear agreement but faulted the president for equating his opponents with those who in 2002 supported invading Iraq. Mr. Hiatt is right that the truth is more complicated. In making his case, however, he reached a common, but unfounded, conclusion that Mr. Obama’s refusal to commit “resources” to Libya led to a brutal civil war and that his withdrawal of troops from Iraq and denial of assistance to “pro-democracy” forces in Syria led to growing instability and extremism and the rise of the Islamic State.
