China’s People’s Liberation Army bans smartwatches

China has placed a ban on Internet-connected wearables, according to NBC News.

Reporting on a decree published in the People’s Liberation Army Daily, China’s official military newspaper, NBC said the warning came on the heels of a recruit stationed in Nanjing trying to use a newly gifted smartwatch to capture images of fellow soldiers.

“The moment a soldier puts on a device that can record high-definition audio and video, take photos, and process and transmit data, it’s very possible for him or her to be tracked or to reveal military secrets,” read part of the Liberation Army Daily’s report on cybersecurity and tightening national security regulations in the age of location-aware, data-transmitting devices.

According to the report, warning signs and teaching materials have been designed to spread the message among military personnel.
