Spangdahlem elementary students to relocate to Bitburg temporarily

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — More than 500 elementary-age students and staff members at Spangdahlem Air Base will be moved to Bitburg Elementary School next fall during construction on the K-4 school at Spangdahlem.

Base and school officials announced the temporary relocation — expected to end by fall 2018 — in a letter to parents, teachers and faculty that was also posted on the 52nd Fighter Wing’s Facebook site.

A town hall to address questions from community members is planned for March 10 at 4 p.m. at the Spangdahlem base theater.

One issue that will likely concern some parents is transportation to Bitburg. The school is about a 30- to 40-minute commute from Spangdahlem and its surrounding villages.

DODDS-Europe will provide transportation to Bitburg for students on and off base, school officials said.

The collaborative decision between the 52nd Fighter Wing and Department of Defense Dependents Schools leadership “resulted after a thorough deliberation of all possible options with primary focus placed on the safety and security of our children,” the letter from base and school officials says.
